Form Patties – Divide ground beef into 6-8 portions. Gently form into patties slightly larger than your buns (they shrink when cooking). Make a small indent in center with thumb.
Season – Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
Cook Burgers – Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat. Cook patties 3-4 minutes per side for medium doneness. Don't press down on burgers while cooking.
Add Cheese – During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with a slice of cheese. Cover with a lid to help it melt.
Toast Buns – Lightly butter and toast buns until golden.
Assemble – Place patties on buns. Top with caramelized onions and any additional toppings desired.
Serve – Serve immediately while warm.
